Local Knowledge edges Solitude Dude to win G2 Amsterdam
Spendthrift Farm’s Local Knowledge was the least experienced horse in the field, but proved best when edging Solitude Dude narrowly in Friday’s Grade 2, $250,000 Amsterdam, a 6 1/2-furlong sprint for sophomores, at Saratoga Race Course.
Trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, the Yaupon bay entered the Amsterdam just 1-for-2, winning his six-furlong debut last October at Keeneland ahead of a 1 1/4-length third versus allowance elders sprinting 6 1/2 furlongs on June 6 Belmont Stakes Day here.
Pletcher, who now has 5,992 career wins, earned his fifth Amsterdam score, following victories with Quality Road [2009], Discreetly Mine [2010], Forty Tales [2013] and Coal Front [2017]. That is one win shy of the record six held by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, who sent out Obliteration to finish third as the 4-5 favorite on Friday.
“It was a pretty determined effort. We were giving up seasoning again,” Pletcher said. “In his second start off a long layoff, he had to run against older horses, and it was one of those things where I think it was a better race than it looked on paper. You could have looked at coming back in an allowance race, but he sold us on this stake the way he had been training."
Piloted by Hall of Famer John Velazquez, Local Knowledge exited alertly from post 2 and tracked American Man from the inside post as he led through an opening quarter-mile in 21.77 seconds over the good dirt. Solitude Dude sat outside of Local Knowledge, the front three running in post position order with Obliteration veering in and bumping Gilded Bandit midway down the backstretch.
The Irad Ortiz, Jr.-piloted Solitude Dude sat on Local Knowledge’s flank in the turn with American Man hanging tough on the lead and Obliteration saving ground to the inside of Gilded Bandit and longshot Rockies Balboa through the half-mile in 44.64.
“He was game. I didn’t expect to be that close to the lead, but I inherited it where I was,” Velazquez said. “I took the horse inside, the horse outside tried to go and keep up with them. I just bide my time. I asked him and I’m very proud that he did [go on].”
Coming to the top of the stretch, Local Knowledge fought on between American Man and Solitude Dude, as Jose Ortiz searched for a way to get Obliteration out and around the front trio. While Obliteration angled out to the inside of Gilded Bandit, Local Knowledge and Solitude Dude kicked clear and it was a fierce duel between them to the wire.
Solitude Dude led narrowly at the eighth-pole, but Local Knowledge battled back in front in the final sixteenth to win by a head in a final time of 1:14.89. Obliteration finished 3 1/2 lengths back in third, with American Man completing the superfecta.
White Smoke Rising, Gilded Bandit and Rockies Balboa rounded out the order of finish. Lincoln’s Law was scratched.
“He felt that horse the whole way down the stretch,” Velazquez said. “For a horse that has only run three times, to do what he did today was very special.”
Pletcher said Local Knowledge will likely target the seven-furlong Grade 1, $500,000 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial on August 29 here.
"I think we have to. I think he'll handle the stretch out to seven [furlongs],” Pletcher said. “As long as he trains the way he has been that's what we'll target."
Ortiz, Jr. said the Saffie Joseph, Jr.-trained Solitude Dude was game in notching his second graded placing.
“He broke so good, I don’t try to hold him or anything,” Ortiz, Jr. said. “He has natural speed, so let him be and find his stride. He relaxed so well and I was happy where I was, honestly. It was a fight all the way to the wire and that horse [Local Knowledge] showed up today.”
Jose Ortiz said Obliteration shifting in and bumping Gilded Bandit early was no excuse.
“When I tried to ease back to get behind the speed, my horse kind of ducked in to the left,” Ortiz said. “It honestly surprised me, but after that I had a very good trip. I have no excuses. I think the excuse wasn't for me but for the horse I probably bothered.”
Bred in Kentucky by Stoneriggs Farm, Local Knowledge, out of the winning Scat Daddy mare Chestnut Street, was a $625,000 purchase at the 2025 OBS Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. He earned $137,500 in victory while returning $10.34 for a $2 win bet.
Live racing resumes Saturday with a 12-race card, highlighted by the Grade 2 Jim Dandy presented by Mohegan Sun [Race 10], the local prep for the Grade 1 DraftKings Travers on August 29. The card also includes the Grade 2 Saratoga Special [Race 6] and the Grade 3 Lake George presented by Surfside [Race 9]. First post is 12:30 p.m. Eastern.
