The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will continue its longstanding tradition of honoring police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) for their dedication and service to their communities on First Responders Day, Thursday, July 23, at Saratoga Race Course.

All first responders will receive free admission with valid identification.

First Responders Day will feature a special ceremony honoring three NYRA peace officers and representatives of the Saratoga Springs Police Department and Saratoga Springs Fire Department for their heroic actions during the recent barn fire at the Saratoga Casino Hotel Harness Track.

Following the second race, NYRA will recognize Security Officer Dave Davis, Security Supervisor Willie Otero and Fire Inspector Joseph Cea, along with representatives of the Saratoga Springs Police and Fire Departments, for their swift response and courageous efforts that helped save nearly 20 horses and prevented the fire from spreading to additional barns. Each will receive a commemorative plaque in recognition of their service.

“Amidst the heartbreaking tragedy that day, we witnessed extraordinary courage, professionalism and teamwork,” said David O’Rourke, NYRA President & CEO. “Dave Davis, Willie Otero, Joseph Cea, and members of the Saratoga Springs Police and Fire Departments responded without hesitation, placing themselves in harm’s way to save horses and protect others. We are proud to recognize their heroism on First Responders Day and to express our gratitude to every first responder who answers the call in moments of crisis.”

The day will also feature First Responder-led musical performances. The City of Albany Pipe Band, the Capital Region's premier pipe band since its founding in 1984, will perform trackside during the afternoon. Known for preserving Scottish and Celtic musical traditions through performances at parades, competitions and community events, the band has entertained audiences for more than four decades.

Continuing a popular First Responders Day tradition, the New York State Troopers Pipes and Drums, the first police pipe band organized in the United States, will also perform trackside.

The afternoon will again feature an appearance by the New York Police Department Ceremonial Unit, which participates in hundreds of ceremonies each year honoring law enforcement officers throughout New York and across the nation.

From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., local public safety agencies will host recruiting events at the Jockey Silks Porch, providing fans an opportunity to learn about careers in public service.

Highlighted by the Grade 1, $1 million Whitney on Saturday, August 8 and the 157th renewal of the Grade 1, $1.25 million DraftKings Travers on Saturday, August 29, the Saratoga summer meet continues through Labor Day, Monday, September 7.
