Scalable looks to double up on stakes scores in $175K Listed Top Flight
Repole Stable’s graded stakes-winner Scalable was a last-out winner of the nine-furlong Ladies on February 6 at Aqueduct Racetrack, and returns to that course and distance in Sunday’s Listed $175,000 Top Flight for older fillies and mares on Closing Day of the Aqueduct winter meet.
Trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, the 5-year-old Speightstown mare was a 2 1/4-length winner of the Ladies, pouncing from fifth early to improve position down the backstretch and edge clear to victory in the lane under Kendrick Carmouche. The win marked her third career stakes victory, adding to scores in the Grade 3 Monmouth Oaks as a sophomore and the seven-furlong Interborough last year at the Big A in an effort that produced a career-best 93 Beyer Speed Figure.
Stu Hampson, Pletcher’s Belmont Park assistant, said he is pleased with the way Scalable has trained into the Top Flight.
“She’s been in good form and hopefully we go over there the way we want her to be,” Hampson said. “She’s been happy and enthusiastic in the mornings, so hopefully we’ll see more of the same the next few days.”
Scalable has shown versatility in both distances and race tactics, winning from seven to nine furlongs and with both prominent and rallying trips. Both of her local victories have come with Carmouche in the saddle, and Hampson said the two make a good pair.
“She’s a really cool horse and Kendrick rode her perfectly last time,” Hampson said. “He’s ridden her a couple of times and he seems to get along with her really well. He put her in a great spot last time and hopefully he’s able to work out a similar trip this weekend.”
Bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, Scalable holds a 16-5-2-2 record that includes a respective third and second in the Listed Pumpkin Pie and Listed Go for Wand at last year’s Big A fall meet. She has banked $634,128, a strong return on investment after she was purchased for $200,000 by Repole at the 2022 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
Carmouche retains the mount from the outermost post 6.
Don Alberto Stable’s Grade 1-placed Kentucky homebred Snowyte [post 5, Jose Lezcano] returns to stakes company for the first time since finishing off-the-board as a maiden in the 2024 Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Del Mar.
Trained by Danny Gargan, the 4-year-old Good Magic bay enters from an 11 1/4-length trouncing of a 1 1/16-mile optional claimer on February 1 at Gulfstream Park, where she led comfortably throughout and drew off with ease under Irad Ortiz, Jr. She netted a career-best 93 Beyer for the effort, which was her first off a more than three-month respite.
Snowyte will contest nine furlongs for the first time, but has performed her best around two turns, including a 5 1/4-length maiden victory going one mile at Monmouth Park in August and a game runner-up effort to subsequent stakes-winner Eunomia in a 1 1/16-mile allowance in October at Keeneland ahead of her last-out score.
"She's training really good, she just won a ‘1-X,’” Gargan said. “We are very excited about going a mile and an eighth. That's something I've always wanted to do. Irad said she'll run all day. We always thought she'd be better around two turns, had to take her to Monmouth to get her maiden broken around two turns. Then at Keeneland, she didn't get the best trip, it was kind of a weirdly run race. She ran really good the other day in Florida, hopefully she can run that race and be right there."
Snowyte was initially sold for $250,000 at the 2023 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, and finished second in her debut in September 2024 at Saratoga Race Course ahead of a runner-up finish to Scottish Lassie in the Grade 1 Frizette at Belmont at the Big A.
In November, she was purchased for $750,000 by Don Alberto Stable at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Mixed Sale, making them the sole owner after she raced for a partnership that included Don Alberto through her first seven outings. She has banked $242,300 through an 8-2-4-0 record and is out of the dual stakes-winning War Front mare Snow Fall.
Bradford Bernstein and Robert Rosenthal’s multiple stakes-winning New York homebred Bernietakescharge [post 1, Ruben Silvera] looks to turn the tables on Scalable after setting the pace and finishing second in the Ladies.
Trained by Domenick Schettino, the Take Charge Indy 5-year-old has been a model of consistency since last January. She has finished first or second in six of her last eight starts at one-mile or nine furlongs, including the local open-company Heavenly Prize last February, and state-bred stakes scores in the Critical Eye in June at Saratoga and the Bay Ridge in December here. She earned a lifetime and field-best 97 Beyer for the Heavenly Prize, where she defeated subsequent multiple stakes-winner Weigh the Risks by 6 1/4 lengths.
Bernietakescharge is out of the stakes-winning Freud mare Berning Rose and is a half-sister to Bernieandtherose, a dual stakes-winning New York homebred for the same connections. She has banked $622,830 through a 21-7-4-2 record that includes four additional stakes placings.
Completing the field are Grade 1-placed Ourdaydreaminggirl [post 2, Sahin Civaci] for trainer Louis Linder, Jr.; Ladies third-place finisher Low Country Magic [post 4, Jaime Rodriguez] for trainer Horacio De Paz; and local last-out optional claiming-winner Lost Horizon [post 3, Flavien Prat] for five-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown.
The Top Flight is slated as Race 7 on Sunday’s eight-race card, which also features the $135,000 Haynesfield in Race 8. First post is 1:10 p.m. Eastern.
